A US carbon removal company has secured investment from Japanese trading firm to expand a facility in Arkansas.

The investment by Sumitomo is notable because it represents one of the first known examples of project-level financing for a durable carbon removal facility.

Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp. has invested in a U.S. carbon dioxide removal project run by American startup Graphyte that takes carbon out of the atmosphere by burying rice hulls.

Global trading conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation acquired an equity stake in Graphyte’s Loblolly project, marking one of the first known instances of project-level investment in a durable carbon removal facility.

Graphyte has entered agreements with Coconino County to squeeze forest thinnings into dense pellets, then stash them underground.

Scaling carbon removal through existing supply chains, community-aligned infrastructure, and signing up JPMorgan in the process.

Over the course of the contract, JPMorgan will receive the credits from Graphyte’s operational Arkansas project, Project Loblolly, as well as a second project being developed in Arizona.

A new long-term agreement between Graphyte and JPMorganChase is bringing durable carbon removal closer to operational scale.

This agreement demonstrates the growing confidence and momentum behind CDR solutions.

The credits will be generated using Graphyte’s Carbon Casting process, which converts biomass into a stable form for permanent underground storage.
